Killing the Baby Seals
Killing the Baby Seals follows a group of cadets enrolled in a high school Army JROTC program. The play takes place over the course of an entire day at a county-wide high school level drill meet. It starts bright and early, and continues rain or shine. There are dozens of events, and a lot of downtime in between those events. The play moves fluidly–one patch of grass on the field indistinguishable from the next. Their home base is a simple canopy with their battalion flag draped across it. They return here for sustenance––poptarts, granola bars, and gatorade. At the center of this play, a group of cadets who face struggles that find new meaning in the bizarre pageantry of drill and high school military preparation programs. Through the theatricality of drill, this play explores the ways in which uniformity and movement sometimes mask and at other times serve as outlets for pent up adolescent fear, frustration, and desire. It examines how the concept of duty––to one’s family, team, school, or other community––can make people do things they don’t want to do, but can also unite people under a common cause.
